A leader whose constant thoughts revolve around the country and its people is Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku (MP). On February 12, in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Tangail Sadar constituency with an overwhelming majority. After taking oath as State Minister on February 17, he immediately began development work in Tangail Sadar.
To improve the fate of farmers in Tangail, on April 14 he arranged the inauguration of the “Agriculture Card” by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He has dedicated himself tirelessly to public service. Ordinary people do not need any ticket or permission to meet him. Even at late hours, people from Tangail Sadar and across the country can meet him and share their problems and hardships. He meets political leaders and activists with a smiling face. Through his relentless efforts and hard work, Tangail is progressing, and the dreams of ordinary people are being fulfilled.
Among all, Sultan Salauddin Tuku is leading in fulfilling the promises he made before the election in Tangail-5 (Sadar). One by one, he is implementing his commitments. In the past two months since the formation of the government, he has been working day and night to improve the lives of the people. With everyone’s cooperation, he hopes to fulfill all promises within the next five years. Those who spread misinformation about him have been silenced. However, conspiracies against him are still ongoing by certain groups.
Sultan Salauddin Tuku, now elected MP from Tangail-5, currently serves as the central BNP’s publicity secretary. Previously, he held leadership roles in Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal. A fighter of street politics, he suffered imprisonment and repression during the previous regime. Jail had become like his second home. After BNP formed the government, he was appointed State Minister of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced a 180-day program and stated that MPs will be evaluated based on their performance, with possible promotions or demotions. People of Tangail expect that Sultan Salauddin Tuku will be promoted from State Minister to full Minister.
He is working tirelessly for the development of Tangail Sadar. Through DO letters, several crores worth of development projects for mosques, temples, madrasas, and educational institutions have already begun through tender processes. For example, the final process for constructing a 170-meter bridge in Magra Union has been completed. The design team recently visited the site. This bridge has long been a demand of local residents, who suffered greatly due to its absence. Tuku had promised this before the election, and within two months, all preparations have been completed. The construction will be inaugurated soon.
Before the election, he also made a strong commitment to eliminate drugs, terrorism, land grabbing, and extortion from Tangail. Special operations against drugs and juvenile gangs have already begun. Over 200 drug users and dealers have been arrested, and many have been sentenced through mobile courts. The operations continue, with at least 40 arrests made in a single day recently. Police operations against criminal networks are ongoing.
Tuku has clearly warned that no extortionist or land grabber, regardless of party affiliation, will be spared. As a result, complaints of such activities have significantly decreased. Many say the law-and-order situation has not been this stable in 50 years. However, there are still allegations that some individuals misuse the party’s name for illegal activities in institutions like Tangail Medical College Hospital. Tuku has advised vigilance and promised action against any party member found guilty.
Field-level observations indicate that Tangail once suffered from severe crime, including extortion, bomb attacks, and illegal arms. People lived in fear. That past still haunts residents. Now, with Tuku, people feel a sense of security and hope that crime and injustice will be eliminated alongside development.
Before the election, he promised major infrastructure improvements, especially in char areas—roads, bridges, culverts, embankments, and religious and educational institutions. Building embankments and developing tourism around them were key priorities. He is actively coordinating with relevant ministries to implement these plans. People believe that all promises will gradually be fulfilled through his efforts.
According to LGED sources, after becoming MP and State Minister, Tuku submitted a proposal to the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, requesting a new infrastructure development project for Tangail district. He highlighted that many areas still lack proper connectivity, hindering movement, employment, industrial development, and agricultural marketing.
He has also applied for the construction of multiple bridges over the Dhaleshwari River and other roads, including 320m, 650m, and 250m bridges, as well as several smaller bridges across different locations. Authorities are expected to act on these applications soon.
He has issued DO letters for 147 roads and culverts across 12 unions of Tangail Sadar, as well as for the development of 307 mosques and temples. Implementation is expected soon.
During Ramadan, BNP organized Iftar and prayer gatherings across all wards and unions in Tangail Sadar. After 17 years, party activists could publicly organize such events, made possible through Tuku’s efforts. A farmer mentioned that his loan of 10,000 taka, including interest, was waived, benefiting even those who did not vote for Tuku.
Under his initiative, agricultural incentives were distributed to farmers, including jute seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. Irrigation machines were also provided in char areas to bring fallow land under cultivation.
During Eid, to reduce public suffering, Tuku personally worked in the field, even managing traffic alongside law enforcement—something unprecedented for an MP.
On April 14, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated 1,470 agriculture cards in Tangail. The visit created a festive atmosphere across the district. Farmers were especially enthusiastic, as no government in 54 years had introduced such a program. This initiative was made possible through Tuku’s efforts.
When asked, State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku said that everyone must come forward to strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He emphasized following the path of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia.
Tangail Sadar will become a model of development, and he is committed to fulfilling every promise made to the People's, InshaAllah, he added.
