Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has said that while the first 100 days of the new BNP-majority government show some positive intent toward improved governance, significant concerns remain over accountability, institutional reforms, and anti-corruption measures.
The observation was presented in a report titled “The First 100 Days of the Government Following the 13th National Parliamentary Election” at TIB’s Dhanmondi office on Sunday, said a press release.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said that although several reform-oriented steps were taken, there are signs of backtracking in key institutional reforms and accountability mechanisms, raising doubts about long-term governance commitments.
The report noted some positive developments, including the abolition of certain privileges for MPs, reduction of VVIP protocols, mandatory office attendance rules, initiatives for asset recovery abroad, and partial progress in parliamentary activity.
However, it also raised concerns over the repeal or suspension of key reform-related ordinances, weakening of institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Commission and Human Rights Commission, and continued political influence in administrative and judicial appointments.
TIB further highlighted issues in governance, including allegations of politicisation in institutions, pressure on journalists, restrictions on freedom of expression, and ongoing concerns about law and order, including violence and organised crime incidents.
The organisation warned that parliamentary oversight has weakened due to inactive standing committees, while financial sector reforms have raised questions over bank governance and accountability.
TIB urged the government to implement a clear and comprehensive roadmap to fulfill its election promises and ensure a corruption-free, accountable, and transparent governance system aligned with public expectations.
