Members of the Prime Mover-Trailer Sramik Union have called off their strike which they started for an indefinite period from 6:00 in the morning today demanding arrest of those involved in the murder of one of their fellows.
The strike was withdrawn around 2:00pm as the deputy commissioner of Chattogram told them during a meeting that the main accused had surrendered before court, said Md Mainuddin, president of the Union.
The strike had disrupted cargo movement between the port and 19 private inland container depots (ICDs)
Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA) Secretary Ruhul Amin Sikder, however, said that goods were being transported all over the country from the ICDs.
A driver of Thasin Enterprise, Shahjahan Saju, 48, was shot dead inside a motor garage in Sitakunda upazila's Kalu Shah shrine area on Wednesday, agitating his fellows, the reports said.
Yesterday, protesting the murder and demanding arrest of the killers, Abu Bakkar Siddiqui, general secretary of the union, announced the strike at Chattogram Press Club.
Police's failure to keep their words that the killers would be arrested in three days led them to go for this protest, he argued.
After the murder, the victim's wife Shahida Akhter lodged a case with the local police, naming as the main accused Md Masum - another employee of the firm.
