Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said no one involved in the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad will be spared.
"There’ll be no mercy for those involved in killing Abrar Fahad. Under the existing law, the culprits will be given the maximum punishment," he said.
He made the remarks while speaking at a dialogue jointly arranged by Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Save the Children, marking the 30th anniversary of Child Rights Convention.
He also assured that Fahad's brother Abrar Fayiaz will be given police protection, if necessary.
"Abara Faiyaz is reportedly feeling unsafe to go to his institution Dhaka College. If this is true, we’re ready to give him security. If Fahad's brother wants security, law enforcers will provide him security," said the minister.
Abrar Faiyaz is a student of Dhaka College.
Anisul Huq mentioned that the government is sincere in delivering justice to the victims and disposing of the criminal cases at the shortest possible time.
"We’re trying to expedite the trial of such cases at the fastest possible time…the trial for the murder of madrasah student Nusrat is over, now awaiting a verdict which will be given on October 24," he said.
The minister further said the government will take action against the university authorities if the problem of ragging on the campus is not resolved.
"Ragging on a campus is a crime. Protests have to come from the students against it...if no action is taken despite their complaints, we’ll take action against the authorities of those institutions," he said.
Abrar Fahad, 21, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering, was beaten to death on October 7 reportedly by Chhatra League leaders at Buet's Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
Abrar's father, Barkatullah, filed a case with Chawkbazar Police Station on Monday evening against 19 people.
