Coronavirus hits metro rail work

The metro rail authorities are facing a big challenge in checking the spread of coronovirus along its 20-kilometre open space construction site after detection of Covid-19 infection cases in one project area.

Sources said around 20 to 25 persons including two Indian nationals were found Covid-19 positive out of employees who work under the Package 7 of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 project.

They said almost all the Covid-19 positive workers were quarantined at the shed set up for workers in the depot area at Diabari of Uttara. Only one was admitted to hospital, a source said.

However, he said all other workers and employees had no such symptom of infection and the one admitted to hospital was also recovering, Though work on the under-construction MRT 6 had remained almost stopped since the shutdown was imposed on March 26, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) could continue work at some parts of the depot site.

The Covid-19 positive workers were engaged in setting up its rail track and electric poles both inside the depot. They were also working on the elevated MRT line near the depot, the sources added.

When contacted, DMTCL Managing Director MAN Siddique refused to talk with the FE but said everything had been posted on the DMTCL website.

However, the FE found on the website that a six-member quick response team was formed on June 15 with Harun-ur Rashid as its secretary stating that the team would provide necessary support to the DMTCL officials and employees regarding coronavirus.
