South African businessmen to invest in Bangladeshi jewellery industry


South African businessmen on Wednesday expressed their interest to invest in Bangladesh’s jewellery industry to tap the huge potential of the South Asian emerging economy.

The foreign delegate made the pledge at a meeting hosted by Bangladesh Jeweller’s Association (BAJUS) at Bashundhara City shopping complex in Dhaka.

During the meeting, South African businessmen said that there is “immense potential” in the Bangladeshi jewellery sector. Some of the delegates also urged Bangladeshi investors to invest in South Africa to help flourish the sector in both countries.

Nokuthula Nokky Ndlovu, a South African delegate, said that as a developing country Bangladesh has an opportunity to tap into the potentials offered by the jewellery sector.

Bangladesh’s jewellery sector will progress when the businesses get proper investment, he said.

BAJUS Vice-President Masudur Rahman urged the South African delegation to invest in Bangladesh jewellery as the sector is progressing over the years.

Pawan Kumar Agarwal, an executive member of BAJUS, said that the demand for diamond studded ornaments in this country is increasing day by day.

“There is no large scale diamond cutting factory in Bangladesh. South African businesses can invest in setting up diamond cutting factories to capitalise on an immense potential,” he said.

South African industry stakeholder Elisa Makwa, BAJUS Vice-Presidents MA Hannan Azad, Md Reponul Hasan and Md Joynal Abedin, Assistant Secretaries Mostafa Kamal, Kazi Naznin Hossain, Farida Hossain, Treasurer Uttam Banik, executive committee members Pabitra Chandra Ghosh, Narayan Chandra Dey, Md Mazibar Rahman Khan, Joydev Saha, Md Salam and Md Ali Hossain were also present on the occasion.
