'Short term plan needed to save economy'

Bangladesh urgently needs to adopt a short term plan for sustainable economic growth and removal of the economic crisis, says Dr Ahsan H Mansur, executive director of Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh, on Sunday.

The country’s economy is now going through various difficulties including the dollar crisis which needs to be solved by good management, he mentioned.

Despite getting more than a year to solve the economic crisis, no action was taken due to political reasons, Mansur said, adding that there is no leadership in the economy to deal with this crisis.

He said, “The Finance Minister is absent for being a political person, he does not want to understand the issues.”

He made the remarks at a seminar on ‘Fiscal Challenges in South Asian’ in the capital on Sunday.

The programme was jointly organised by the South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and the World Bank.

The main discussion was presented by World Bank’s South Asia Chief Economist Dr Franziska Lieselotte Ohnsorge.

Executive Director of SANEM, Dr Selim Raihan said that the next two-three years are very important for the economy of Bangladesh.

Urgent steps are needed now to stabilise the macroeconomy, he said, adding that the delay has already caused several side effects. Now if the situation worsens instead of improving, it will become extreme, he mentioned.
