BD reports 21 more deaths, 1,383 new cases


Bangladesh today confirmed 21 more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 1,383 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours ending at 8am Friday.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 5,093 and the number of total infections stood at 356,767, according to the press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the deceased patients in the last one day: 14 were men and seven were women. Moreover, 16 of them hailed from Dhaka, two from Chattogram, one each Rajshahi, Khulna and Rangpur divisions.

All of them have died in different hospitals across the country, read the DGHS statement. 

The latest day's infection rate was 11.09% while the overall infection rate was 18.90%.

In the same period, 12,593 samples were collected and 12,473 were tested in 103 laboratories across the country. So far, 1,888,010 samples have been tested in the country.

Some 1,932 patients have recovered from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours and the total number of recoveries reached 267,024. The recovery rate currently stands at 74.85%.

The country's first cases were detected on March 8 this year. The first death from the virus was reported 10 days later, on March 18.
