Bangladesh has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in a day since the pandemic made landfall in the country in March last year.

The death toll climbed to 9,822 after 83 fatalities were registered in the 24 hours to 8:00am Monday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the latest day's victims, 54 were men and 29 were women. Of them, 74 died in different hospitals across the country and five breathed their last at home. In addition, four more died while being taken to hospitals.

Moreover, 54 of the victims hailed from Dhaka, 17 from Chattogram, four from Khulna, three from Rajshahi, two each from Barishal and Sylhet, and one from Rangpur division.

The country has recorded 7,201 new cases of the coronavirus, taking the tally to 691,957.

The infection rate jumped to 20.59 percent from 19.81 percent of Sunday’s. So far, 5,037,833 samples, including 34,968 in the last 24 hours, have been tested.

Bangladesh has been seeing record number of infections with daily case count surpassing 7,000-mark earlier this month before falling significantly on April 10 and April 11.

Meanwhile, 581,113 patients have recovered so far, including 4,523 in the last 24-hour period, the DGHS said.

The government launched a vaccination campaign on February 7 with doses received from the Serum Institute of India continues. Experts are calling for ramping up the drive and urging people to follow the health guidelines to keep themselves and others around them safe.

On April 8, Bangladesh began its second phase of inoculation amid uncertainty over vaccine availability.

The country's maiden cases were reported on March 8 last year and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18 that year.
