BD confirms 5 more deaths from coronavirus, 41 new cases

Bangladesh today confirmed that five more people, including four men and one woman, died from the novel coronavirus and 41 tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

Thus, the number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 164, while the death toll stands at 17. 

"Some 792 samples were tested in last 24 hours and 41 new Covid-19 cases were detected," Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), said during an online press briefing today.

"Among the new casualties, two are from Dhaka and three victims are from outside of the capital. Two of them were aged above 60s," the IEDCR director added.

Dr Flora said, "There are 28 men and 13 women among the newly detected virus patients. 23 of them are from Dhaka, 15 from Narayanganj, one each from Keraniganj, Cumilla and Chattogram."

She also said 33 people have cured from the deadly virus in last 24 hours.

Professor Abul Kalam Azad, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services said, "606 people were sent to home quarantine and 32 in institutional quarantine in last 24 hours."

"Some 115,904 calls were received on coronavirus hotlines, a total of 1,601,677 call so far," he added.

This is the biggest jump in positive tests over a 24-hour period since Bangladesh announced its first cases on March 8.
