Awami League advisory council member Tofail Ahmed today said Bangalee nation had bestowed Bangabandhu title on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, subsequently the Father of the Nation, for showing gratitude to him on February 23 in 1969.

“February 23 is a unique and special day for Bangalee nation. Bangabandhu planted seeds for Liberation War through Language Movement. The then autocrat ruler Ayub Khan knew one person who will never compromise and he is Bangabandhu,” he said.

Tofail was addressing a discussion marking the 50th anniversary of Bangabandhu title at Shilpa Kala Academy in the city under the arrangement of AL publicity and publication sub-committee.

Tofail said Bangabandhu’s speeches and work reflected the tone for emancipation and freedom of the people of this soil.

HT Imam, AL advisory council member and sub-committee chairman, chaired the function while AL publicity and publication secretary and information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, cultural personality Syed Hasan Imam and Dhaka City South AL general secretary Shahe Alam Murad addressed it.

Imam said Bangabandhu had prepared the nation gradually for independence to establish the rights of people of this country from the 1952 language movement to 1971 Liberation.

Hasan said Bangabandhu had laid the foundation of becoming a developed country within only three and a half years after independence.

The information minister said Bangladesh is now well ahead of Pakistan in different indices including social, economic and human resources following the footsteps of Bangabandhu under the leadership of the Awami League-led government.
