Global Hunger Index 2022: Bangladesh ranks 84 out of 121 countries

Bangladesh has been placed in 84th position out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2022 with a score of 19.6 which indicates a moderate level of hunger.

Although Bangladesh's score suggests a "moderate level of hunger" exists in the country, it is just 0.4 points shy of touching "serious level", which ranges from 20.0 to 34.9. The higher the score, the more acute the hunger situation, and vice versa for ranking.

Bangladesh did better than its South Asian neighbouring countries including Pakistan which ranked 99th, India 107th, and Afghanistan ranked109th, according to the report jointly published by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe.

However, it lagged 20 places behind crisis-torn Sri Lanka which ranked 64th. Sri Lanka’s score is 13.6 which is far better than Bangladesh’s score 19.6.

For the 2022 GHI report, data were assessed for 136 countries. Out of these, there were sufficient data to calculate 2022 GHI scores for and rank 121 countries (by way of comparison, 116 countries were ranked in the 2021 report).

For 15 countries, individual scores could not be calculated and ranks could not be determined owing to lack of data. Where possible, these countries were provisionally designated by severity: 4 as serious and 4 as alarming. For 7 countries, provisional designations could not be established (see Provisional Hunger Severity Designations).

Data are not available or not presented. Some countries did not exist in their present borders in the given year or reference period.

Ranked according to 2022 GHI scores. Countries that have identical 2022 scores are given the same ranking (for example, Costa Rica and United Arab Emirates are both ranked 18th).

The 17 countries with 2022 GHI scores of less than 5 are not assigned individual ranks, but rather are collectively ranked 1–17. Differences between their scores are minimal.
