Minister hopes balanced egg price in joint effort

The government will ensure a balanced price of eggs in joint effort of policy makers and traders breaking the syndicate of unnatural profit gain in market.

“If there is any business fixing the price of eggs through monopoly in market, the government will certainly not accept it. Also, it must be remembered that those who are making huge investments cannot be asked to sell eggs at a lower price than the actual cost of production,” Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim said at a programme in the capital on Friday.

Department of Livestock Services (DLS), World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) jointly organised the meeting at Krishibid Institute marking World Egg Day.

The minister assured that the government will cool down the price of egg through joint effort of poultry association, directorate of consumer rights protection, ministry of commerce, agencies under ministry of local government involved in market management and ministry of fisheries and livestock.

“There are some dishonest traders who create an undesirable business environment. Production and marketing are two separate parts. A more balanced price will come in the case of eggs if the authorities concerned with market management take this matter under surveillance,” he said.

The minister informed the meeting that government is waiving the import tax if anyone wants to set up a factory or industry for manufacturing animal and fish food in the country.

Fisheries and Livestock secretary Nahid Rashid, Additional Secretary Shyamol Chandra Karmakar BPICC president Masiur Rahman, Bangladesh Agricultural University Prof Bazlur Rahman Mollah, Department of Livestock Services Director Rayazul Haque  and Birdem Hospital Chief Nutritionist Shamsunnahar Nahid Mahua also spoke in the meeting presided by DLS Director General Manjur Mohamamd Shahajada.
