600 sacks of Indian sugar seized in Ctg, 1 arrested

Some 600 sacks of illegally stocked Indian sugar were seized and one person was arrested in a mobile court drive in a furniture factory in the port city on Saturday.

The drive was led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kattoli Circle and Executive Magistrate Arafat Siddiqui in Nafiz Gali in Ek Kilometre area in the city’s Bahoddarhat area at 1 pm.

The arrestee identified as Md A Rabban, 45, son of late Fazal Ahmed of village Noapara in Raozan upazila, is the owner of the furniture factory.

Sources said Rabban stockpiled the sugar and then packed it in the sacks marked with Fresh brand.

District Agricultural Marketing Officer Morshed identified the stocked sugar as the Indian one.

However, the accused, Rabban could not show any valid documents against the purchase of the sugar during the drive.

Taslim Shahriar, deputy general manager of Meghna Group of Industries, said the Fresh brand belonging to the conglomerate has no connection in this regard.

“The arrested person was trying to supply the Indian sugar to the market in the name of Fresh brand,” he added.

Magistrate Arafat said that Rabban was handed over to Chandgaon police station for further legal proceedings. The filing of a case in this connection was under process.

The magistrate also informed that the seized sugar was handed over to the custody of the police station.

Such drives will be continued in the coming days in public interest under the initiative of district administration, Arafat added.

District Agriculture Marketing Officer Shah Md Morshed Quader and Sub Inspector Riyad Us Salehin also assisted with the drive.
