FT ONLINE

The selling of sacrificial animals started informally in the capital’s 21 temporary cattle markets as also in the permanent market of Gabtoli yesterday. The sale of sacrificial animals will, however, start formally tomorrow. As Friday was a weekly holiday many customers visited different city markets to take an account of prices of animals on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated on August 22.

Shafiqur Rahman, a government employee and a resident of Mirpur-01 government quarters, said that he was just checking out the prices of animals at Gabtoli market. “Though we have decided to buy our animal on Sunday or Monday, we can even buy it today or tomorrow if we get it at a reasonable price. The prices of animals are a little bit high this year compared to that of the last year,” he said.

Masud Bepari, a cattle trader of Kushtia in Gabtoli haat said, “It is true that the prices of animals are bit high this year because of the increasing prices of the animal feed in the country. I have brought 20 animals with a hope to earn some extra profit. The customers are only asking about the prices.”

Meanwhile, animals of different sizes and of different genre like camel, dumba and goat etc have arrived Gabtoli market, one of the biggest cattle markets in the capital city of Dhaka. Cattle are still coming from different parts of the country to the markets. Many trucks carrying cattle are stranded in the traffic jam on the Dhaka-Tangail-Mymensingh highways and Paturia-Dawlatdia and Kathalbari ferry terminals.

This year the government has fixed 2,954 spots in 11 city corporations of the country for slaughtering sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha. On Thursday, Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, the minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives urged the people to slaughter their sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha day at those pre-decided spots to avoid environmental and health hazards.

Among the spots 620 are in Dhaka South, 543 in Dhaka North, 210 in Rajshahi, 314 in Chattogram, 163 in Khulna, 135 in Barisal, 36 in Sylhet, 183 in Narayanganj, 117 in Rangpur, 190 in Cumilla and 443 are in Gazipur. The law enforcement agencies have taken initiatives of setting up watch towers to ensure the security of the cattle traders as well as the buyers.
