Nahid’s writ dismissedNo bar for BNP’s Quayum to contest in polls

The High Court on Tuesday dismissed a writ petition filed by National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, challenging the validity of BNP-nominated Dr MA Quayum’s candidacy in the Dhaka-11 constituency for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

The High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan passed the order.

Earlier, Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a candidate of the 11-party alliance in the Dhaka-11 seat filed a writ challenging the legality of Dr MA Qaiyum’s candidacy, the BNP-nominated contender on allegations of dual citizenship and concealment of information.

The petition seeks a High Court order suspending Dr Qaiyum’s candidacy in the constituency.

Advocates Zahirlul Islam Musa and Ali Azgar Sharifi appeared on behalf of Nahid Islam.

Advocate Zahirlul Islam Musa said the writ petition is expected to be heard by the High Court later this week.

Earlier, the Election Commission declared the nomination papers of both Nahid Islam, candidate of the 11-party alliance and NCP convener, and Dr MA Qaiyum, the BNP nominee and the party’s assistant secretary for microcredit affairs, to be valid.
