AL nominates Atiq for Dhaka north, Taposh for south

FT ONLINE

Ruling Awami League (AL) has picked Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh to run for mayoral elections of Dhaka north and south city corporations respectively.

The decision was taken during a meeting of Awami League’s local government nomination board with the party’s president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Saturday night.

The party made the announcement on Sunday.

The AL general secretary Obaidul Quader came up with the announcement while talking to reporters after attending the meeting at Ganabhaban around 9:30 pm.

Meeting sources said that the party gave the opportunity to mayor Atiq as he got less than a year to serve the people of the Dhaka North City Corporation.

The local government nomination board dropped incumbent Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokan for his failure in various fields, including tackling the dengue outbreak of this year.

Born in 1971, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, a member of Bangabandhu family, was elected as a member of the Parliament from Dhaka 10 constituency for the third consecutive term in 2018.

On December 28, BNP nominated Ishraque Hossain for mayoral race of Dhaka South City Corporation and Tabith Awal for Dhaka North City Corporation.

The elections to the city corporations will be held on January 30 next year.
