BD reports four more deaths from and 219 new cases

Bangladesh today confirmed four more deaths, three men and one woman, from the novel coronavirus and 219 new cases of infection in the country.

Some 1,740 samples were tested for coronavirus in last 24 hours. 

With this, the death toll rises to 50 from the virus and a total of 1,231 people are infected so far. Earlier on Tuesday, 209 new cases of infection were found after 1,905 tests.

Disclosing the matter during a virtual press briefing today, Health Minister Zahid Malik said, "

Along with Dhaka's Mirpur, Basabo and Narayanganj, the government has taken into account Gazipur, Mymensingh and Keraniganj districts as coronavirus patients are increasing there alarmingly."

The minister also said, "As many as 20 labs across the country are providing the testing facility for coronavirus. We have ensured 200-bed ICU unit in every hospital of divisional cities and 5 to 100-bed Covid-19 dedicated hospitals in district towns."

"Considering the increasing number of infected patients, we are enlisting some more hospitals- Mugda Medical College and Hospital, Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital, Railway Hospital, Old Burn unit."

"Among the dead patients, three are male and one female. Two of them are aged 70 plus, one is 50-year old Dr Md Moyeen Uddin and the last one is aged between the range of 31-40, who was a cancer patient," said Additional Director General of Health Directorate Nasima Sultana.

"Some 2,048 samples were collected and 1,740 testedin last 24-hour. Seven patient cured during the period," she added.

Nasima Sultana further said, "71 people were taken to isolation and 20 left in a period of time from - 8am on Tuesday to 8am today- making the total to 433 in isolation after 4,502 left so far. The total isolation beds in the country are 7,693, among which 1,550 are in Dhaka and 6,143 in other parts of the country."

"Currently, 488 institutions in all 64 districts of the country are providing institutional quarantine facilities which are ready to accommodate 26,352 patients. As per the latest quarantine data of the country, 25,760 are in home quarantine and 2,629 are in institutional quarantine after a total of 1265 left quarantine in last 24-hour," Nasima added.

Designated coronavirus hotline numbers received a total of 1,02,837 calls in last 24 hours and a total of 24,26,899 calls were received till date.

So far, 9,58,294 personal protective equipments (PPEs) were distributed across the country. Currently 4,58,322 PPEs are in stock.

DG of Heath Services Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad started the briefing with the news of Professor Dr Md Moyeen Uddin, an assistant professor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, who died today from coronavirus.

The government will take the responsibility of his family, he added. 

The DG further said, "Seven new Covid-19 patients were detected in Dinajpur. They went there from virus epicentres Dhaka and Narayanganj recently."

The virus, which is believed to have started spreading from China, has already killed 126,812 people and infected 1,986,986 around the world, according to data of Johns Hopkins University.
