BD's COVID-19 deaths cross 300-mark, cases reach 20,995

The fatalities from COVID-19 in the country climbed to 314 after 16 new deaths were registered in the last 24 hours to 8:00am on Saturday, data from the health directorate showed.

Besides, confirmed cases of coronavirus also reached 20,995, a rise of 930 from the previous day.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), presented the latest figures while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

All those who died during the period are male, Nasima mentioned.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 6,782 samples in 33 labs across the country. Prof Nasima said they are yet to receive test results of remaining eight labs in Dhaka.

Also, 235 more patients have recovered from the disease in the 24-hour period, taking the total number of recoveries to 4,117.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 308,845 as of Saturday noon.

It has so far infected 4,641,328 people around the world, according to Worldometer - a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 2,565,094 are currently being treated with 45,010 remain in serious or critical condition.

So far, 1,767,389 people have recovered. 

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the COVID-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.
