BD records highest 42 coronavirus deaths, 2,743 new cases

Forty two more people died of the highly infectious coronavirus disease in the last 24 hours to 8:00 am on Sunday.

With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 888.

This is the highest single-day death count from coronavirus in Bangladesh.

Among the fatalities, thirty five were male and the rest were female.

Meanwhile, 2,743 more people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 65,769.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 13,136 samples in 52 labs, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 13,903 after 578 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the whole country was put on lockdown for more than two months, but the pandemic is showing no sign of slowing down.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 402,449 as of Sunday noon.

It has so far infected 6,994,605 people around the world, according to Worldometer - a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 3,172,108 are currently being treated with 53,639 remain in serious or critical condition.

So far, 3,420,048 people have recovered.

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the COVID-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.
