BD reports 37 deaths, 2595 new cases


Bangladesh has registered 37 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 3,694.

Besides, the country also logged more than 279,000 coronavirus cases with 2,595 people having tested positive over the same period.

With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 279,144.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Monday.

Of the 37 deceased, including 28 men, 20 were from Dhaka division, six from Khulna, four from Chittagong, three each from Rajshahi and Rangpur, and one from Barisal division.

So far, 2,918 men (78.99%) and 776 women (21.01%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.32%.

The DGHS said 12,836 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 12,523 samples were tested in the 87 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 2,595 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 20.72%.

To date, 1,364,189 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.46% so far.

The health authorities said 1,641 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 160,591 patients — 57.53% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 773,497 lives and infected 21,849,825 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 14,574,418 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
