BD reports 46 more deaths, 2,265 new cases in 24hrs


Bangladesh confirmed 46 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours till 8am on Saturday.

The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 3,907, said a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In the last 24 hours, 2,265 people tested positive for Covid-19 and the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2,92,625.

Of the dead patients, 36 were men and ten were women. Moreover, 27 of them hailed from Dhaka, eight from Rajshahi, five from Chattogram, two each from Sylhet and Barishal, one each from Rangpur and Khulna division.

Forty-five of them have died in different hospitals and one at his respective residence.

According to the press release sent by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the recovery count rose to 175,567 after another 2,952 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period.

The DGHS said 10,595 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.  

As many as 11,356 samples were tested in the 91 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country. 

Of the total sample tests in the past 24 hours, 19.95% tested positive, while 20.44% cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the release added.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2. 

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months. 

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 803,634 lives and infected 23,144,577 people across the world till 4pm on Saturday, according to Worldometer. 

As many as 15,730,519 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the globe. 

The website also confirms that so far, the number of active cases stands at 6,610,424 globally. Of which, 6,548,698 (99%) were identified to be in mild condition while the rest 61,726 (1%) have been marked as serious or critical.
