Bangladesh celebrates Eid-ul-Azha amid Covid spike

Bangladesh is celebrating the holy Eid-ul-Azha, the second biggest religious festival of the Muslims, amid the pandemic on Wednesday with due solemnity and religious fervor.

Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated on the 10th of Zilhaj to commemorate the true spirit of sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

On this day, Prophet Ibrahim had offered to sacrifice his son, Ismail, who willingly submitted to the will of his father to please Allah.

But the Almighty in His benign mercy spared Hazrat Ismail (AS) and instead sent a ram to be sacrificed.

To commemorate this historic event, the Muslims across the country will offer prayers in congregations and sacrifice animals in the name of Almighty Allah.

They will offer munajat seeking divine blessings for peace, progress and prosperity of the country as well as welfare of the Muslim Ummah.

Meanwhile, the government has taken various safety measures to make that the celebration does not help the pandemic worsens further.

Concerns are growing among people over possible hike in Covid deaths and cases after the celebrations of Eid-ul-Azha as the movement of people increased remarkably after the withdrawal of the strict lockdown ahead of Eid.

A large number of people left the capital in crowded vehicles ignoring the Covid transmission risk.

The first congregation was held at Baitul Mukarram at 7 am led by Mufti Mizanur Rahman.

Meanwhile, the country’s largest and most traditional Eid congregation, which is usually held at Kishoreganj’s Sholakia on the northern bank of the Norsunda River, was cancelled this year too as the country fights to contain the coronavirus spread.

However, the guidelines issued by the Religious Affairs Ministry for offering Eid-ul-Azha prayers were largely maintained both in the capital and elsewhere across the country.

Law enforcement agencies, including police and Rapid Action Battalion, took tight security measures to maintain government rules and law and order.

Once the prayers were over, the common festive scenes of sacrificing animals were seen everywhere in the city.

Dhaka South City Corporation has formed 10 teams and set up a central control room to monitor the removal of sacrificial animal waste from July 21-24 while the Commerce Ministry formed three-phase committees for the management of rawhides of sacrificial animals.

Special diets are being served in hospitals, jails, government orphanages, centres for persons with disabilities, shelter homes and vagrant and destitute welfare centres.
