PM opens two water plants

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday formally inaugurated two projects -- the Padma (Jashaldia) Water Treatment Plant (Phase-1) and the Well Field Construction Project at Tetulzhora-Bhakurta of Savar Upazilla Phase-I -- to ensure a steady supply of drinking water for the residents of the capital.

Six hundred million liters of water will be supplied to Dhaka city every day through the two projects of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Dwasa).

The Prime Minister digitally opened the projects from Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.

Besides, she laid the foundation stone of construction of Gandharbpur Water Treatment Plant at Rupganj under Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project.

Dhaka city will receive some 450 million liters of water every day from the Padma (Jashaldia) water treatment plant located in Lauhajang Upazila.

The plant was constructed to meet the growing demand for drinking water of Dhaka city dwellers.

According to Dwasa, water from the Padma River will be treated at the plant and then be sent to Dhaka city through a pipeline.

The project has been implemented at a cost of Tk 3,670 crore. Of the amount, Tk 1,265.58 crore was provided by the government while the remaining Tk 2,404.92 crore by the Exim Bank of China as project assistance.

Prime Minister Hasina laid the foundation stone of the project in October 2015, which was constructed in time by a Chinese company.

Dwasa implemented the Well Field Construction Project in the Tetulzhora-Bhakurta area of Savar Upazilla Phase-I to bring 150 million liters of water per day to reduce dependence on groundwater at Mirpur.

Wasa now supplies around 300 million liters every day to Mirpur, and most of it comes from groundwater.

A South Korean company constructed the Well Field Construction Project (Phase-I) at a cost of Tk 573 crore.

Of the amount, Tk 363 crore came as project assistance, while Tk 200 crore from the national exchequer and (Tk 10 crore) the fund of Dwasa.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam presided over the function, while Local Government Division Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming, South Korean Ambassador in Dhaka Hu Kang-il, ADB Country Director Manmohan Parkash and Dwasa Managing Director Taqsem A Khan spoke on the occasion.

A video presentation was made on the occasion highlighting the development activities of Dwasa in the last 19 years.
