Bangladesh seeks Chinese investment in tourism sector

Speakers at the China-Bangladesh Tourism Promotion Conference on Tuesday called on Chinese investors to explore Bangladesh’s vast opportunities in the tourism sector, aiming to foster a sustainable economy and deepen bilateral ties.

Organised by the Embassy of China in collaboration with the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB) and the Bangladesh National Museum, the event emphasised enhancing tourism cooperation and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The speakers highlighted the potential for business growth in both inbound and outbound tourism.

Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber, CEO of the Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) and chief guest at the conference, expressed optimism about the initiative.

“This conference will act as a bridge between our nations and advance the development of the tourism sector,” he remarked.

Fatema Rahim Veena, additional secretary at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, encouraged Chinese investors to take advantage of Bangladesh’s natural attractions, including the world’s longest sea beach in Cox’s Bazar and the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest.

Li Shaopeng, cultural counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, underscored the importance of the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

“Expanding cultural exchanges and people-to-people connectivity is vital for strengthening our partnership,” he said, assuring the embassy’s continued support in fostering these relations.

ATAB President Abdus Salam Aref praised the collaborative efforts behind the conference and welcomed Chinese government officials and business leaders to invest in Bangladesh’s tourism industry.

He highlighted ATAB’s role as the apex body representing 4,000 travel agents under the Ministry of Commerce.

This conference marks a significant step towards deepening cooperation in tourism and strengthening the cultural and economic ties between Bangladesh and China.
