The United States on Wednesday announced a 37% tariff on imports from Bangladesh as part of President Donald Trump’s "Reciprocal Tariffs" policy, aimed at countering what his administration calls unfair trade practices.

A White House chart claims Bangladesh effectively imposes a 74% tariff on American goods. In response, a "discounted reciprocal tariff" of 37% will now be applied to Bangladeshi exports to the US.

The measure, part of Trump's "Liberation Day" trade initiative, introduces a baseline 10% tariff on all imports, with higher rates targeting countries accused of protectionism, currency manipulation or imposing non-tariff barriers against US exports.

Bangladesh, whose economy relies heavily on garment exports to the US, could face significant consequences, with industry leaders in Dhaka voicing concerns that the tariff hike could erode the country’s competitive edge.

India and Pakistan are also affected, with Washington imposing tariffs of 26% and 29%, respectively, citing high trade barriers on American products.
