Edu adviser slams renaming of KU's Jagadish Bose building

Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud on Tuesday said the decision to rename the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building at Khulna University is unthinkable.

He expressed his dismay over the renaming of the university’s administrative building and several halls while speaking at the 16th convocation ceremony of Brac University, held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Purbachal, Dhaka.

“We have heard stories about Jagadish Bose since childhood. Khulna University had buildings and establishments named after great scientists like Jagadish Chandra Bose and Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, among others. However, these names have now been changed, which has deeply saddened me,” he said.

Wahiduddin further said, “I hope the university authorities and students will work together to rectify this decision.”

“We do not want an unstable environment in educational institutions," he also added.

Recently, a syndicate meeting at Khulna University decided to rename several buildings and halls.

The Syed Nazrul Islam Administrative Building was renamed after the university’s first vice-chancellor, Golam Rahman.

Additionally, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall was renamed Bir Shrestha Mohammad Ruhul Amin Hall, Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall was renamed Bijoy 24 Hall, Satyendra Nath Bose Academic Building was renamed Academic Building 1, Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building became Academic Building 2, Poet Jibanananda Das Academic Building was renamed Academic Building 3, and Joy Bangla Building was renamed Academic Building 4.

Moreover, the names of three faculty quarters were also changed.

Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Md Rezaul Karim told the media that these new names were approved in the syndicate meeting following student demands.
