Secondary School Admission5pc quota for families of uprising victims

The families of those killed or injured during the July uprising will receive a 5% quota benefit in the admission process for government schools.

Additionally, the children of freedom fighters or martyrs will also be eligible for this benefit.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education issued an order to this effect on Sunday.

Instructions have already been sent to school and college principals for the implementation of this decision. Earlier, on 20 February, an official order regarding this matter was issued by the directorate.

According to the official order, 5% of seats in government secondary schools will be reserved for the children of freedom fighters or martyrs and for the families of those injured or martyred in the July uprising. The relevant certificates or gazette copies must be attached to the application form, and the original documents must be shown during the admission process.

The order further clarifies that the relevant person's freedom fighter certificate issued by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs or the gazette for those martyred in the July uprising should be properly verified before completing the admission process. If the children of freedom fighters or martyrs, or the families of the uprising victims, are not available, the seat will be filled from the merit list. Under no circumstances will any seat be left vacant.

Additionally, during a press conference on 27 February, Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief advisor, announced that families of those who lost their lives during the July-August movement will receive a one-time financial assistance of Tk30 lakh. Moreover, each deceased person’s family will be provided a monthly allowance of Tk20,000 starting this month.
