Former CEC ATM Shamsul Huda passes away at 83


Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda has passed away at the age of 83.

Shamsul Huda was declared dead at the hospital around 10:15 am, said Parvez Hasan, executive of the Customer Service Department at the United Hospital

His brother-in-law Ashfaque Quaderi said, he breathed his last around 9 am on Saturday at his residence in Gulshan of the capital. He was later taken to United Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

According to family sources, his namaz-e-janaza will be held once his daughter returns from the United States. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

ATM Shamsul Huda served as the Chief Election Commissioner who oversaw the ninth parliamentary election in Bangladesh, held in 2008. His tenure is often remembered for efforts to restore credibility to the electoral process following a period of political turmoil.

Born in 1941, Huda began his public service career by joining the Pakistan Civil Service in 1966. Following Bangladesh’s independence, he transitioned into the Bangladesh Civil Service and held various important government roles.

During his distinguished career, he served as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Bagerhat, Secretary to the Ministries of Water Resources and Finance, and also held the position of Managing Director of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Bank. He retired from government service in 2000.
