Govt vows justice over attacks on peaceful NCP rally in Gopalganj

The interim government has strongly condemned the violent attacks on a peaceful rally of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, the government said, “Those responsible for this brutality will face justice.”

The statement came just hours after violent attacks on the motorcade of NCP leaders following a rally in Gopalganj marking the first anniversary of the July uprising.

The assaults were allegedly carried out by members of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and other Awami League loyalists.

NCP members, police personnel, and journalists came under attack, according to the statement.

Vehicles were vandalised, and several individuals were reportedly assaulted in what the government termed a “heinous act” and a “shameful violation of fundamental rights.”

“The use of violence today (Wednesday) in Gopalganj is utterly indefensible,” the statement read. “There is no place for such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh.”

The government also praised the Army and police for their prompt intervention, which helped restore order.

It also commended the resilience of the rally participants who continued the programme in defiance of threats and violence.

"Let it be made absolutely clear: violence has no place in our nation. Justice must and will prevail," the statement added.
