Dispute over smoking Attack and vandalism at Shohagh Paribahan counter, owner’s house in Malibagh

Two person including Shohagh Paribahan’s owner Ali Hasan Talukdar Palash was critically injured and several others were wounded after a mob of 60 to 70 people attacked Sohag Paribahan counter and the residence of the company’s owner in the capital’s Malibagh area late Wednesday night.

The other injured, identified as Masud, personal driver of the company’s owner Ali Hasan Talukdar Palash, sustained multiple deep wounds from sharp weapons while trying to prevent attackers from entering the house. He is now battling for his life at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), police said.

According to Shohagh Paribahan authorities, Billal, president of the Ramna Thana unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, led the attack.

“They stormed the counter, vandalised property, and even assaulted innocent passengers,” company officials claimed.

Witnesses and counter staff told reporters that the incident ensued around 11:15 pm when two young men were smoking in front of the Shohagh Paribahan counter. Counter officials asked them to move away, which triggered a heated argument.

“A few minutes later, the two youths returned with a mob of about 60 to 70 people, chanting slogans,” one counter employee said.

“They launched a sudden, violent attack, smashing glass windows, furniture, and other equipment,” the employee added.

Locals reported that nearby pedestrians and shopkeepers fled in panic as the attackers vandalised the counter and indiscriminately beat up staff members and passengers.

Majedul Haque Nadim, brother of Ali Hasan Talukdar Palash, alleged that Billal led the assault.

“They tried to attack my brother Palash, smashed his car and even tried to storm our house,” he told reporters. “Masud, the driver, was hacked multiple times while trying to stop them.”

However, Nadim claimed they were unaware of any specific reason behind the sudden attack.

Responding to the incident, Ramna Model Police Station’s duty officer ASI Ashraful Islam said a police team was dispatched immediately after receiving a 999 emergency call. Senior officers, including the investigating officer, also visited the scene.

Sub-Inspector Md Nahid of Ramna Model Police Station confirmed that at least two people were critically injured in the attack and several others sustained minor injuries.

“We have learned that 60 to 70 people stormed the counter, assaulted staff and vandalised property. We are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved,” he added.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at Sirajul Islam Medical College Hospital and several other nearby clinics.

Police said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and identify all perpetrators involved.
