Bangladesh to buy Tk 340cr LNG from Swiss firm


The government of Bangladesh decided to import 33.6 lakh metric million British thermal units of Liquefied Natural Gas worth Tk 340.62 crore.

The decision was finalised in a meeting of the cabinet committee on economic affairs on Wednesday, chaired by finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

In an online news briefing, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Sahida Akhter informed that the price of per MMBTU will be $10.1997.

According to the decision, state-owned Petrobangla will bring in the fuel from Switzerland's AOT Trading AG.

The cabinet committee decision came following government approval of two proposals to buy a total of 67.2 lakh British thermal units of LNG from the spot market for Tk 623.64 crore.

The government approved it on February 18, authorising Singapore-based Vitol Asia Pte Ltd to supply the fuel.

The cabinet committee in their Wednesday’s meeting also approved a total of nine proposals, including one for setting up a 400MW power plant at Raozan in Chattogram by a Chinese company.

SEPCO-III Electric Power Construction Company Ltd, China will set up the power plant at Raozan in Chattogram at a cost Tk 17.97bn under the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
