Market sees sale of per kg ginger at Tk 200

Two months are still left for the Holy Eid-ul-Azha. Already, price of spices has increased in the market.

In other years, the tendency of hiking price of essentials was reportedly observed ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, but this time traders, wholesalers and importers have adopted strategy taking time, said a media report.

As a result, the wholesale market at Khatunganj in Chattogram witnessed Tk 160 to Tk 180 a kg of ginger on May 2. But the same market saw selling of one kg ginger at Tk 120 to Tk 140 on April 29.

In the market, there is less supply of local ginger for which the ginger imported from Myanmar is fulfilling demand. It is heard that ginger from Vietnam and Thailand are not available in the market. But a container of ginger reached Khatunganj via Chattogram port from China on Tuesday. That imported ginger from China was sold at Tk 200 per kg yesterday and made a record.

Basically, ginger is not being imported from China for a long time. Therefore, price of ginger is so high in the market, the media report added.
