Travel ban imposed on RAB officer

A Dhaka court on Thursday imposed a foreign travel ban on an officer of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for allegedly amassing huge wealth beyond his known sources of income.

The officer Uttam Kumar Biswas, an additional superintendent of police, is now posted at the RAB-2.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain gave the order after Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) Assistant Director Ruhul Haque applied for the ban.

Mahmud Hossain Jahangir, the prosecutor of the ACC, took part in the hearing for the commission.

The court wanted to know from if Uttam Kumar was still in service.

The prosecutor replied in the affirmative. Then, the court granted the application seeking travel ban on the RAB officer.

According to the application lodged by the ACC in the court, the commission has begun an inquiry into the charges of illegally amassing huge wealth.

Earlier, the ACC asked the RAB officer to provide records of wealth of him and his wife.

The investigation officer of ACC assistant director Ruhul Haque in his plea for a travel ban, said 'after getting the notices, they withdrew money from their bank accounts, which was suspicious.'

The accused not only remained unhelpful in conducting the probe but also continued to hamper the process by providing false and confusing information, he added.

The RAB man may flee the country, and in that case the inquiry will face difficulties, the ACC prosecutor said.
