Govt to secure well-being of marginalised people in next budget: CPD

The government will look at the upcoming national budget (FY 2022-23) as an opportunity to secure the well-being of marginalised people, revive the Covid-impacted economy, and stimulate private sector investment, according to the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD).

CPD made the observation at a media briefing on recommendations for the national budget for FY 2022-23 on Tuesday at its office,  where it was recommended that the interests of consumers, farmers, and producers should remain the major concern of policymakers.

CPD’s argument has been that people’s welfare and purchasing capacity, rather than the extent of the budget deficit, should inform the budgetary stance for FY23, the leading think tank said.

According to the think tank, the philosophy underlying budgetary proposals in developing countries is income redistribution in favour of marginalized groups and communities.

Presenting the keynote paper, CPD Executive Director Fahmida Khatun, suggested the government strengthen market monitoring to ensure access to inputs at a subsidised price.

Distinguished Fellow Professor Mustafizur Rahman, CPD Research Director Khondaker Golam Moazzem, and Senior Research Fellow Towfiqul Islam Khan were also present at the event.
