Secondary trading of treasury bills, bonds doubles in Jan-Nov

Secondary trading of fixed income government securities doubled in the first 11 months of the current calendar year, according to the central bank statistics.

It showed that the total value of the secondary trading of treasury bills and treasury bonds stood at Tk 233.49 billion in the January-November period of 2019. The value was Tk 110.36 billion in the same period of 2018.

Treasury bill is short-term fixed-income debt securities of Bangladesh government while treasury-bond is long-term in nature.

Bangladesh Bank statistics also revealed that the highest amount of secondary transactions of these debt securities took place in September this year. The value of the transaction was Tk 47.12 billion.

Annual secondary transaction of treasury bills and bonds was Tk 164.41 billion in 2018, a 41 percent drop from the previous year’s annual transaction of Tk 282.91 billion.

The sharp decline of a secondary transaction of the government’s marketable debt instruments reversed in the current year mainly due to the decline in sales of savings certificates.
