Shuvendu took oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal

In a landmark political transition, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal today, May 9, 2026, marking the first-ever BJP government in the state after ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress.

The ceremony at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and 23 Chief Ministers from other Indian states.

The BJP secured a massive mandate with 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while Adhikari achieved a personal milestone by defeating Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipore constituency.

Five cabinet ministers, including Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul, were also sworn in, as the state celebrated this historic shift with the symbolic distribution of "Jhalmuri" across the venue.
