Death toll rises to 16 in Narayanganj mosque blast


At least 16 people died and 24 others were injured as gas leakage triggered an explosion and six air conditioners exploded inside a mosque during Isha prayer in Narayanganj's Fatullah on Friday night.

Of the deceased, 14 were identified as Delwar, 48, Jewel, 7, Jamal, 40, Sabbir, 18, Jubayer, 18, Humayun Kabir, 70, Kuddus Bepari, 70, Ibrahim, 42, Mostafa Kamal, 34, Rifat, 18, Junayet, 28, Joynal and Rasel, 30.

"Death toll from the mosque blast has climbed to 16," Dr Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed the matter to media today. 

"The condition of 20 other people with serious burn injuries is critical. We are trying our best," said Dr Samanta. 

President Mohammad Abdul Hamid has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in this tragic incident and wished the injured a quick recovery.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also expressed her deep grief over the incident and directed to give maximum care to the victims.
