Jatiya Press Club to run following pro-liberation spirit: Farida Yasmin

Farida Yasmin, newly-elected and the first-ever female President of the Jatiya Press Club, has reiterated that the supreme organisation of the country’s journalists will be run in line with pro-liberation and secular spirits.

“The Jatiya Press Club will function following the pro-liberation spirit as it was run in the past. The Club will be off-limit to any anti-liberation, fundamental and detrimental forces,” said Farida, who was General Secretary of the organisation in the previous term.

She along with other elected leaders of the pro-ruling and liberation forum paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing floral wreath at his portrait in the Club premises Friday morning.

The victory of Farida Yasmin is an epoch-making as she has become the first female president of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) in its 66-year history.

Farida got 581 votes in the Jatiya Press Club election while his rival candidate Kamal Uddin Sabuj of pro-BNP forum bagged 395 votes.

The election was held peacefully on the Jatiya Press Club premises on Thursday followed by the results at night.

Elias Khan, a candidate of pro-BNP forum, has become general secretary, defeating Omar Faruk in the elections. Khan got 566 votes while Faruk bagged 399 votes.
