Modi pays tribute to Bangabandhu at Tungipara

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his Tungipara mausoleum.

After placing wreaths, the Indian prime minister stood in solemn silence for some time there as a mark of respect to the memory of the architect of Bangladesh independence, who was assassinated by a cabal of army men on the dreadful night of 15 August, 1975 along with his spouse and most of his family members.

A special munajat, seeking eternal peace of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of the August 15 carnage and martyrs of the Liberation War, was also offered.

Sheikh Hasina along with her sister Sheikh Rehana showed the Indian Prime Minister various parts of the mausoleum.

Earlier, on his arrival at Tungipara, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received him at the Bangabandhu Memorial Complex with a bouquet. Sheikh Rehana was also present.

He also signed the visitors' book and planted a sapling there.

Earlier, Modi arrived at Tungipara, the ancestral home of Bangabandhu, by a helicopter after visiting Jashoreshwari Kali Temple at Ishwaripur village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district on Saturday morning.

Modi, who attended concluding ceremony of the celebration of Bangabandhu birth centenary and golden jubilee of Bangladesh yesterday, reached Satkhira at around 10:00 am from Dhaka and offered puja at the temple.

Later, he visited Orakandi Thakur Bari, a sacred shrine of the “Matua” community in Gopalganj.

He also exchanged views with the family members of Harichand Thakur and leaders of Matua community.
