Half of polling centres in Dhaka risky: DMP

Half of the polling centres out of 2,146 in the capital are risky, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman said on Monday.

“In Dhaka city, security measures have been taken identifying half of the polling stations as risky,” he told reporters after attending the National Textbook Festival at Rajarbagh Police Lines School and College.

“There are also polling centres in outlying areas within the city, and trawlers are needed to reach there. Considering all aspects, I believe our security system is strong,” he said.

Along with the police, the DMP chief said, Ansar members will also carry out duties in the polling stations. Besides, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other law enforcement agencies will patrol outside the stations, he said.

“I think there will not be much problem for the election to be held peacefully,” Habibur added.

As per the Election Commission schedule, the 12th parliamentary polls will be held on 7 January.
