Female garment worker killed in 3-way clash in Ashulia


A female garment worker was killed and at least ten others were injured in a clash between two groups of workers in the Zirabo area of Ashulia today.

The deceased was identified as Rokeya Begum. She was working as an Assistant Sewing Machine Operator at Mascot Garments. Rokeya joined the factory on December 1, 2021.

Md Sarwar Alam, SP of Ashulia Industrial Police-1 confirmed the death.

Mascot Garments was closed under Section 13(1) of the Labor Act. The workers of Mascot Garments took a position at the gate of the closed factory this morning.

Later, workers of two garment factories -- Mascot and Radiant -- clashed this morning. Both groups threw brickbats at each other. Then there was a three-way clash between Southern and Radiance workers and Mascot workers. A female worker was killed in the clash. Rokeya Begum, a worker of Mascot garments, died in this clash.

An official of the Industrial Police said that a woman worker was killed in a clash between two sides of the workers in front of Mascot Garments. Three workers were injured. However, local workers say that this number can be 10 to 15.

Gazipur Industrial Police Assistant Superintendent of Police Mosharraf Hossain said that her body had been taken to PMK Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, he said, adding that two of the injured had been hospitalized.

Labour unrest had been going on in Savar-Ashulia and Gazipur industrial areas over two weeks. But the majority of the factories operated peacefully on Sunday and Monday with no report of unrest.
