Cabinet Reshuffle Speculation Mounts Ahead of Six-Month Benchmark

Intense speculation is surrounding a potential cabinet reshuffle within the administration led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as the government approaches its six-month milestone. Multiple government and party sources indicate that key structural shifts in several high-profile ministries are currently under active consideration, with official announcements expected as early as this week.

According to insider sources, the ministries slated for immediate portfolio adjustments include the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, the Ministry of Water Resources, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Under the potential reassignment strategy, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed is widely expected to assume charge of the Local Government Ministry. Consequently, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee is under strong consideration to take over the Home portfolio.
Should the Water Resources ministry become vacant, current Health Minister may be transitioned to lead that ministry. Simultaneously, State Minister for Health Dr. M A Muhit is being considered for promotion to full cabinet minister, taking over complete charge of the Health Ministry.

The anticipated shift in the Local Government portfolio comes in light of Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir receiving the nomination from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) as its presidential candidate.

Sources reveal that the prospective realignment follows a comprehensive performance evaluation conducted at the government's highest levels prior to completing its first six months in office. Concerns have reportedly emerged regarding the underperformance of select cabinet members, alongside controversies generated by unconsidered remarks that negatively impacted the administration's public image. Public scrutiny and social media criticism targeting the personal conduct of a few ministers have further accelerated discussions surrounding these administrative changes.

As uncertainty grows among ministers whose positions are under review, lobbying efforts within the governing party and its coalition allies have intensified. Several senior politicians and coalition leaders are actively engaging party high commands, citing their historical political contributions, sacrifices during past movements, and dedication to secure positions in the expanded cabinet.
