Govt plans to determine prices of agro-products

The government has planned to determine prices of agricultural products in a bid to eradicate anomalies by the middlemen in the market.

The Department of Agricultuaral Marketing (DAM) is working to this end.

Primarily, work is going on to fix the prices of some 20 to 25 agro-product items, including rice, lentil, potato and onion. The department concerned is collecting production costs from grassroots farmers.

It is learned after analysing market data that farmers do not get fair prices of agro-based products if they go for more production. But price of any product becomes several times when it is dealt by middleman. Such an unstable sutaution has been prevailing for years.

On the other hand, farmers can do nothing in terms of marketing of their products other than assistances of the middlemen.

Under such a situation, many say that this long standing issue may be resolved if prices of agro-products are settled.
