FT ONLINE

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday approved importing 6.5 million tonnes of non-urea fertilisers.

These will be imported from countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Belarus, and Canada between 2020 and 2025.

Finance Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal presided over the meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital.

According to a proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture, every year the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) imports nearly 1.3 million tonnes of Triple superphosphate (TSP), Diammonium phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MOP) fertilisers to meet local demand.

Each year the BADC will import the fertilisers taking counter guaranty from the government, it added.

After the CCEA meeting, the finance minister also chaired another meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement at the same venue.

The meeting approved a proposal regarding the construction of temporary (service) jetty with a connecting road at Payra Port at a cost of Tk 670 million.

The meeting also approved two proposals on setting up 170 cyclone shelter centres in Chattogram and Bhola districts.
