Three held over GCC executive engineer killing

Police have arrested three persons including an assistant engineer of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) for their alleged involvement in the murder of Delwar Hossain, an executive engineer GCC.

The arrestees were – GCC's Assistant Engineer Anisur Rahman Selim, his associate Shahin and Habib, the driver of microbus used in killing.

They were arrested from Kafrul, Pallabi and Vatara areas in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Uttara division) Nabid Kamal Shaibal confirmed the matter at press briefing on Thursday evening.

He said the murder was committed in a planned way, and police suspected that this may happen due to previous animosity. However, he could not be clear about the motive of the murder.

"Shahin and Habib gave confessional statements before the court on Thursday. The court granted a five-day remand for questioning Assistant Engineer Selim," he added.

Police are still investigating the matter and trying to find out if anyone else was involvement in this incident, said DC Nabid.

Police recovered the body of an executive engineer of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) on May 12 from Beribadh area under Turag police station.

The deceased was identified later as Delwar Hossain, an executive engineer of Konabari zone of the city corporation. Later, his wife filed a case at Turag police station.

Describing the incident, DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Uttara zone) Kamruzzaman Sardar said assistant engineer Selim did all these in a preplanned way. He hired Shahin and driver Habib to kill Delwar.

"When we started investigation, we talked to some officials of the GCC. Then we found out that assistant engineer Selim canceled the vehicle which was used for transporting Delwar," he said.

On the day of the incident, Selim and his associate waited with a microbus in-front of Delwar's house.

"Later, he called Delwar from a rickshaw puller's phone number. When Delwar got into the microbus Selim sat beside him and Shahin sat behind him," Kamruzzaman said.

"When the vehicle was moving, Shahin strangled Delwar with a rope while Selim grabbed his leg. Later, they dumped the body in Uttara's sector number-17 and threw the mobile phone in a nearby lake. We seized the microbus and recovered Delwar's mobile phone," he added.
