White paper on economy to be submitted Sunday: Debapriya


The Committee on the preparation for “White Paper on the State of Bangladesh Economy” will submit the final report to the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday at 12pm, said chairman of the committee Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya on Thursday.

He made the disclosure at a seminar titled, “Current Economic Situation and Launching of Open Budget Survey 2023 Results” jointly organised by the Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF) and Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID), held at the ERF auditorium in Dhaka.

“The outcomes of the white paper will also be shared with the media on Monday at a press briefing. Then it will be available for all,” he highlighted.

The macro-economist also said that the ambition of the revolution will be not fulfilled if the country’s economic stability and security remain concerned.

“A forum for inclusive sustainable development should be held in January to bring all international aiders and investors as well as other stakeholders under an umbrella. The issues of SDG and LDC can be included in the forum,” he also highlighted.

Dr Debapriya noted that a perspective has been created through the revolution in August this year. The state administration should be operated with efficiency.

Mentioning the dangerous economy in the country, he highlighted five prioritized issues for action plans for a-six month period to stabilize the country’s economy. “Massive irregularities found in banking and energy sectors”

“There is an enthusiasm and also concern in the country. However, we have to work on inflation control, investment in private sector, government’s investment and expenditure, tax collection, and foreign sector management,” he also said.

Presenting keynote paper, RAPID chairman Dr MA Razaque said the country’s economy may face a crisis moment in next six-nine months if macro economy is not stabilized.

“We have to increase reserve to control inflation. Our demand side is well but supply side management should be improved now,” he added.

Earlier, Open Budget Survey 2023 Bangladesh Results was launched there.

RAPID Executive Director Dr M Abu Eusuf, Finance joint secretary Anarul Kabir, and journalist Shawkat Hossain Masum also spoke there.

ERF general secretary Abul Kashem moderated the function while its president Mohammad Refayet Ullah Mirdha was chair in the seminar.
