BD sees 46 more virus deaths and 3,471 fresh cases, both single-day records

Bangladesh on Friday witnessed its highest single-day rise in both Covid-19 fatalities and infections.

A total of 46 people died of the deadly respiratory disease in the last 24 hours to 8:00am today, the health directorate said.

With the latest, the death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 1,095 in the country.

Meanwhile, 3,471 more people tested positive for coronavirus, pushing the total number of cases in the country to 81,523.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily Covid-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 15,990 samples across the country, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 17,249 after 502 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

Bangladesh reported its first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the whole country was put on lockdown for more than two months, but the pandemic is showing no sign of slowing down.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 424,084 as of Friday noon.

It has so far infected 7,609,731 people around the world, according to Worldometer - a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 3,333,306 are currently being treated with 53,915 remain in serious or critical condition.

So far, 3,852,341 people have recovered. 

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the Covid-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.
