UN adopts Bangladesh's key resolution on Natural Plant Fibres

The resolution titled 'Natural Plant Fibres and Sustainable Development' proposed by Bangladesh has been generally approved by the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Bangladesh Mission in New York on Wednesday reported that member states were encouraged by a groundbreaking resolution to advocate for the sustainable production, consumption, and utilization of natural plant fibres.

The overwhelming endorsement reflects the global community's acknowledgement of Bangladesh's steadfast dedication to safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainable development by employing natural fibres such as jute, cotton, and sisal in a considerate and sustainable manner.

It emphasized political support, resource mobilization, capacity-building, and effective management to drive momentum for the sustainable production, consumption, and use of natural plant fibres at the global, regional, national, and local levels.

The resolution also recognized natural fibres as a commendable alternative to synthetic and plastic-based products, highlighting that the production, consumption, and use of natural fibres can contribute to achieving the 2030 agenda.

On November 21, when presenting the resolution, the delegate from the Bangladesh Mission to the United Nations in New York conveyed gratitude to all delegations for their active participation, flexibility, and contributions in fortifying the resolution and reaching a consensus.

In his statement, the representative stated that the government of Bangladesh, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, takes the resolution very seriously.

Underscoring the complementary role of natural plant fibres in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity, the Bangladesh representative called for international cooperation to ensure the full implementation of the resolution.

In 2019, during the 74th United Nations General Assembly, Bangladesh introduced a resolution, which has subsequently been biannually endorsed by members of the UN.
