After 21 years, Tarique lands in Sylhet

After a long wait, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has set foot on Sylhet soil. The arrival of the party chief after 21 years is causing joy in Sylhet.

He landed at Sylhet’s MAG Osmani International Airport on Wednesday night at 7:56 pm aboard in a Biman Bangladesh Airlines jet. On this tour, he is accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other central and local leaders of the party.

BNP's Sylhet district unit President Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury and Acting President of the city unit Rezaul Hasan, welcomed him on arrival.

There was great enthusiasm among BNP leaders and activists across Sylhet regarding the arrival of Tarique Rahman. The presence of party leaders and activists and supporters created a buzz in the airport area. Many Sylhet residents expressed their excitement in the media and said that the joy of Eid is prevailing in Sylhet today.

Earlier, The BNP supremo departed from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka around 6:30pm for Shahjalal International Airport.

From the airport, he will travel by road to Shahjalal shrine, followed by Shah Paran’s shrine in Khadimnagar.

After paying his respects, he will visit his late father-in-law Mahbub Ali Khan’s house in Birahimpur, Silam Union, South Surma, before retiring for the night at Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort.

Kaiyum said, “After inaugurating the poverty alleviation programme in Silam Union in 2004, Tarique Rahman visited his in-laws’ home for the first time. He is returning there for the second time after 21 years.”

On the occasion of Tarique Rahman's arrival, the premises of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shahparan (RA) shrines were cleaned and decorated under the supervision of the shrine authorities. Special measures were taken to maintain security and discipline. The overall management was coordinated considering the presence of party leaders and activists and the general public.

Confirming the matter, BNP's central co-organizing secretary Miftah Siddiqui said, Tarique Rahman arrived at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at 8 pm today, Wednesday. He will go to his in-laws' house after visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shahparan (RA). All preparations have been completed for the visit.

It is worth noting that this is Tarique Rahman's first visit to Sylhet after assuming the responsibility of party chief. When he came to Sylhet for the BNP union representative conference about 21 years ago, he was serving as the BNP's joint secretary general.

According to party sources, he will exchange views with some apolitical youth at the Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort at 10 am tomorrow, Thursday. Later, he will address as the chief guest at a public meeting organized at the Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa ground in the city's Chowhatta area around 11 am.

After the Sylhet rally, Tarique Rahman will return to Dhaka by road. On the way back, he will address two separate public meetings as the chief guest in Sherpur of Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila and Shayestaganj Upazila of Habiganj. BNP-nominated candidates of the respective districts are also scheduled to be formally introduced at these meetings.

Tarique Rahman is also scheduled to address rallies at Kuttapara Playground in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria, Bhairab Stadium in Kishoreganj District, areas adjacent to the municipal area of ​​Narsingdi, and Gausia in Rupganj, Araihazar Upazila of Narayanganj District.
